about KNYSNA

KNYSNA

The town of Knysna started in 1804 when sir George Rex arrived in the area. It was believed that he was the illegitimate son of king George the 3rd. Knysna's official founding date was 1825. Today, Knysna is one of the Garden Route's best known travel destinations.

Situated between lush forests and the shores of the peaceful estuary it offers many activities and attractions to a wide variety of people. The Knysna area consists out of Knysna, Sedgefield, Brenton, Noetzie, Rheenendal, Belvidere and Buffalo Bay. The area is one of the most scenic in the world and offers beaches, lakes and lush forests to play in. With a rich history, gourmet restaurants and a variety of art & craft rambles to add, this is also the ideal base for exploring the rest of the Garden Route. THESEN ISLAND

Thesen Islands is a multi-award winning marina development within the Knysna estuary on the renowned "Garden Route" of South Africa. The marina is spread over 90ha and consists of 19 man-made islands surrounded by 25ha of tidal waterways and linked by 21 arched bridges. The Thesens (originally from Norway) began processing timber on the island in 1922 and the island soon became known as Thesen Island. In 2000, the Thesen Islands redevelopment of 19 islands began.

Thesen Island offers a variety of shops, coffee shops and restaurants for you to explore. For the active members of the family there are tennis and squash courts, cycling routes and beautiful walking paths on the island with 11 acres of natural parkland boasting an abundance of bird life. It has its own private blue flag beaches as well as slipways for the launching of boats, and waterways to explore.
